September may be the ninth month of the year, but for kids all over the country, it’s the first month of the new school year, a time of fresh starts and clean slates. In our New England village, gardeners are scrambling to stay ahead of the first frost, and our pantry shelves are sporting a collection of canning jars filled with dilly beans, blueberry jam, applesauce, and other treats. For cooks, the bounty of the harvest season is never greater, and the cooler weather invigorates our zest for new recipes.
